On June 28, 2026 the Cleveland Russian Cultural Garden hosted an Ivan Kupala celebration at their Garden and hundreds attended.
Ivan Kupala (aka Kupala Night or Noc Kupaly) is a traditional East Slavic midsummer festival aligning with the summer solstice. The name "Kupala" is commonly derived from the Proto-Slavic verb kopati, meaning "to bathe" or "to immerse," which underscores the festival's themes of purification and ritual cleansing through water. Over time, "Kupala" evolved into "Ivan Kupala" through Christian syncretism, associating the pagan bathing rituals with the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (Ivan in Slavic traditions). There were activities for the kids, dance and music performances, and great food. Here are a few photos from the Ivan Kupala in Cleveland.
